Golf!!!

I guess I need to change my blog name to “Bullets, bikes and balls”…..golf balls, that is. Years ago I played golf several times a week and then after starting to ride bikes my golf outings became almost non-existent. I would play a couple of times a year when I was on vacation. This year I’ve decided to play more golf and to help motivate that effort I bought some new clubs. Not only a new set of irons, but a new driver, bag and shoes, the whole nine yards. My first trip to the range yesterday with my new clubs was quite interesting. The demo 6 iron I tried while deciding on which clubs to buy I hit 2 clubs farther than I normally do. Yesterday the wind was blowing like crazy (25-30mph gust) and I didn’t feel like I was getting the extra distance from my clubs like I did the demo, but it was a lot colder and the wind was blowing so I won’t pass judgment just yet.

After hitting a bucket of balls I decided to play 9 holes on the par 3 course and since I was just trying to get a feel for the new clubs I played 3 balls, did a lot of chipping with the 60* lob wedge and did not putt. When I got to hole 5 it played dead into the wind and was playing about 100 yds. Gap wedge came up short, PW came up short, so I decided to play a knockdown 7 and hit it on a rope straight at the pin. Where the hole was cut on the green I couldn’t see the bottom of the flag but I heard my ball hit the flag. When I got on the green I was looking around the green and didn’t see the ball. I was thinking to myself that there is no way it’s in the hole, well, when I looked in the cup there it was. I reached in a got my ball then looked around and I felt like that kid on that commercial, no one around.

I guess it kinda counts as a hole-in-one….

Range work day

We had a work day at the range yesterday, mainly general maintenance but Jeff, Bill and a couple other worked on re-siding the clubhouse. We got the pistol range cleaned up and we threw away a bunch of stuff that has been cluttering up the storage room long before I was a member. We had great weather and got a lot done. If anyone is interested to shooting sometime just let me know.

Finally finished

Finally got my Bell & Carlson stock in and installed, now the barrel is fully floating. Got to make a trip to the range last Wednesday to try some 175 grain SMK’s, and they grouped great. Ordered 500 to start working of fine tuning the load. Gonna be a fun summer.



         


Riding Season

Looks like the weather is finally took a turn for the good and it’s gonna be a great weekend for riding. Hitting the dirt tomorrow, only decision to make is single speed or gears. Leaning towards single speed….

         


New Stock for 700

Finally got a new stock ordered for my Remington 700. The cheap plastic stock that came with the rifle did not have any bedding block which didn’t allow the barrel to free float. I ordered a Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist M40 stock which has a full length aluminum bedding block. Now to get it installed and finished dialing in the load and bullet weight I want to use and get a bulk order placed.


         


Verizon iPhone

When Verizon announced they would be getting the iPhone I knew I would get one, just didn’t think it would be this soon. My daughter sent me a text on Tuesday saying that her phone was dying and she needed a new one. A quick check on-line she was due for an upgrade, but I also noticed I was as well. When I got home from work that evening I got her phone ordered and started looking into my upgrade. Although it showed I wasn’t due until October, which is when I was expecting to upgrade, I was now eligible for the upgrade. What the hell, I should be getting my bonus check any day now so yesterday I went by the Verizon store and may the swap from my Droid. Best move I ever made. From the time the iPhone was turned on, it’s smooth as butter…..unlike the droid.

Almost ready…

Almost ready for the range. Scope mounted, laser boresighted and extended floor plate installed. Waiting on some Hornady A-Max bullets to work up a couple of loads and the laser range finder so I’ll know exacty how far I’m shooting. Hopfully I’ll be making a trip to the range on Saturday.



         


Long Distance

I have been wanting to try some long distance shooting. The ranges where I’ve been going to shoot my rifles are normally 100 yards and one has some targets about 200 yard but I’ve been wanting to try something in the 500+ yard range. One of the guys I work with has some property in Blount County that I should be able to get out to 1000 yds if I want. My first thoughts were to build a precision AR and the more I looked the higher the cost got. Then it was just building a AR upper to use with my existing lowers, something I’ll probably still do but for now too much money to get what I want and I didn’t want to try to do a build on the cheap. After several weeks of looking I decided to get a Remington 700. The 700 comes in a bunch of different models, from tactical to varmint and many versions in-between. Last weekend I was at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn, my normal local shop, and they had a 700 LTR sitting in the rack, the “LTR” is Light Tactical Rifle. Chambered in 308 Winchester, the 700 LTR has a fully floated 20″ fluted bull barrel, light weight composite stock and all black, just what I was looking for. After a bit of wheeling and dealing I brought it home.
Today I started getting in some parts. I got a 1 piece Weaver base along with a set of Leupold rings and to go in the rings I’ve got a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42sf BDC scope on the way. A few other little items I’ve ordered is an extended mag well that will increase the rounds from 4-7 and along with that is a Blackhawk cheek rest with 5 round holder. Things down the road with be a mag conversion that will convert the floor plate to accept 5 and 10 round magazines and then maybe further down the road will be precision stock, but that’s way down the road. Hopefully I’ll get the glass in and mounted and some rounds loaded and get this thing to the range in the next couple of weeks.
